This Bust of a Woman is linked to Auguste Rodin (1840–1917), the French sculptor generally regarded as the father of modern sculpture. Rodin did not set out to rebel against the past: he was trained traditionally, took a craftsmanlike approach and sought academic recognition, though he was never admitted to Paris’s leading art school.
