Dionysos portrays the Olympian god of wine, vegetation, pleasure, festivity, madness and wild frenzy. He was shown either as an older, bearded god or as a long-haired youth, with attributes such as the thyrsos (a pine-cone tipped staff), a drinking cup and a crown of ivy. A troop of Satyrs and Maenads usually accompanied him. The work is displayed at the Museum für Abgüsse Klassischer Bildwerke in Munich, a museum of Greek and Roman sculpture from the 7th century BC to the 5th century AD.
