Female sphinx adorned with jewels is a terracotta statue of a sphinx, a female monster with the body of a lion, the head and breast of a woman and eagle’s wings. In Greek myth she was sent by the gods to plague Thebes, devouring all who failed to solve her riddle. Kreon, regent of Thebes, offered the throne to whoever could destroy her. Oedipus took up the challenge and solved the riddle, freeing the city.
