Beschrijving
Figurine of a Female is a Japanese dogū, a clay figurine from the prehistoric Jōmon period (14,000–300 BCE). The most varied forms come from north-eastern Japan, where this example was found. It belongs to the shakōki or ‘goggle-eyed’ type, with distinctive large eyes, colour and complex carved decoration. Nobody knows for sure how these figurines were used; many are found with missing limbs, which may have been broken on purpose.
