Florence Triumphant over Pisa is a marble group commissioned in 1565 by Prince Francesco de’ Medici as a pendant to Michelangelo’s Victory. The two works were to be shown together in the Salone del Cinquecento of the Palazzo Vecchio for Francesco’s marriage to Joanna of Austria in December that year. There was not enough time to choose and transport the marble block, so the full-size model was shown instead; the final work was completed in 1570.
