German woman portrays Thusnelda (c. 10 BC – after AD 18), a Cherusci noblewoman and daughter of the chieftain Segestes. She became the wife of Arminius, who in AD 9 led a coalition of Germanic tribes that nearly destroyed the Roman legions of Publius Quinctilius Varus at the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest. In May AD 15 Thusnelda was captured by Germanicus, nephew of Emperor Tiberius, after her father, a Roman client opposed to Arminius, delivered her to him. Arminius grieved her loss and did not marry again. Their only child, Thumelicus, was born in captivity on 26 May AD 17.
