Geta was Roman emperor alongside his father Septimius Severus and his older brother Caracalla, becoming Augustus in 209. Severus died in 211 intending his sons to rule together, but they could not share power, and in December of that year Geta was murdered on his brother’s orders. All images of him were then destroyed, and his supporters were massacred across the empire, making surviving portraits of Geta all the more remarkable.
