Gorilla defeating a Gladiator (“Retiaire et Gorille”) by Fremiet is one of the most unsettling and arresting sculptures shown in Europe in the 19th century. Fremiet was a skilled sculptor, first known for his careful observation of animals. Later he made larger groups like this one, capturing dramatic fights between man and beast. Works like this shocked viewers because they showed the animal as the winner, breaking with established sculptural traditions.
