Madonna and the Child is a cast of a marble relief of the Virgin and Child that was placed at the altar of Saint Bartholomew. The Madonna and Child is one of the most common types in Christian art, with many traditional subtypes, especially in Eastern Orthodox icons, named after famous icons or the posture shown, such as Hodegetria and Eleusa. The word Madonna, meaning a picture or statue of the Virgin Mary, entered English in the 17th century, mainly for works of the Italian Renaissance. In an Eastern Orthodox context such images are known as Theotokos.
