The Monument to Paul I in Gatchina stands at the southern imperial residence near St Petersburg. Catherine II bought the estate in 1765 and gave it to her favourite Grigory Orlov; Antonio Rinaldi directed its construction from 1766 to 1781. After Orlov’s death in 1783 it passed to Tsarevich Paul Petrovich, the future Paul I, who had Brenna rebuild the castle as his residence and expand the park, creating one of the most romantic ensembles near St Petersburg.
