Nereid on pistrice (sea-monster) is an ancient marble from the Peloponnese showing a Nereid seated on a pistrice. The Nereids were the fifty sea nymphs, daughters of Nereus and Doris, who helped sailors in fierce storms and lived with their father in the depths of the Aegean Sea; one of them, Thetis, was the mother of Achilles. The pistrice is a legendary sea monster with a snake’s tail, found in depictions of Neptune’s processions and on nautical maps up to the Renaissance.
