Caffieri, who specialised in retrospective portraits, sculpted the statue of Corneille after making a marble bust of the playwright for the Comedie-Francaise in 1777 (visible in the theatre foyer). The titles of his most famous plays – The Cid, Horace, Cinna, Polyeucte and Rodogune – are inscribed on the open book at his feet.
