The Portrait of Pietro Mellini is a marble bust by Benedetto da Maiano, dated 1474 and kept in the Bargello Museum in Florence. Pietro Mellini was a rich Florentine merchant, several times prior and an ally of the Medici, who also commissioned the pulpit of Santa Croce with Stories of Saint Francis from Benedetto. An inscription on the marble records the sitter’s name and the date. Inspired by Antonio Rossellino, the bust portrays the old man with great meticulousness, including the signs of age, in the realistic manner also seen in Domenico Ghirlandaio’s paintings.
