The Seated Man, Dionysus is cast from the south corner of the Parthenon’s east pediment (438–433 BC). The centre of the pediment showed the birth of Athena from the head of Zeus, but this figure turns away to greet the chariot of the rising sun. He is usually identified as Dionysus, although Hercules has also been suggested. A masterpiece of the high classical style.
