This Siren statuette depicts a bird with a human head. Sirens were closely related to the Muses and, according to legend, even challenged them to a musical contest. Plato placed a singing siren on each sphere of heaven, together personifying celestial harmony. In tombs, terracotta sirens were laid with mourning women to give the lament a more sublime character. The earliest Attic marble sirens date from the 4th century BC.
