The Standing Nude Male Figure (Michelangelo) is one of a pair of clay sketches by Rodin from around 1911 demonstrating contrapposto, the pose of a body bearing its weight on one leg. This figure, slumped and twisted inward, shows the psychological intensity of Michelangelo’s Renaissance contrapposto. Rodin gave the pair to Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney during her visit to his studio at the Hôtel Biron in Paris in 1911; they are now in the Metropolitan Museum.
