The Charioteer of Delphi was found by French excavators in 1896 near the temple of Apollo and is one of the few original Greek bronze statues to have survived. It lay where the travel writer Pausanias had described it, buried by a rock fall. Scholars believe it is only part of a much larger group that remains unknown. The statue was cast in several pieces using the lost-wax method, modelled first in clay and wax. Near the figure two fragments of text were found; the closest reads ‘Polyzalos dedicated me’ in Ancient Greek.
