Beschrijving
The Chiaramonti Niobid represents one of Niobe’s daughters trying to escape the arrows of Apollo and Artemis. Niobe, Queen of Thebes, had fourteen children, seven sons and seven daughters, and therefore considered herself superior to Leto, who had borne Zeus only two, Apollo and Artemis. To punish the insult to their mother, the two gods killed all Niobe’s children with arrows, Apollo the sons and Artemis the daughters. The figure is probably a copy from the age of Hadrian, perhaps once part of a group of all the Niobids.
