Beschrijving
The River is unusual in Maillol’s work for its daring instability and twist. He usually sought serenity and stillness, yet around 1938 he conceived this almost reckless figure. Planned as a war theme for a monument to the pacifist writer Henri Barbusse, it became The River when the commission fell through. The figure lies low, hanging over the edge of the pedestal, the personification of moving water.
