The Wild Boar is the famous Florentine bronze fountain known as Il Porcellino, the ‘piglet’. Baroque master Pietro Tacca (1577–1640) sculpted and cast it shortly before 1643 after a marble copy of a Hellenistic original, now in the Uffizi. The original was found in Rome, brought to Florence by the Medici in the mid-16th century and linked to the Calydonian Boar of Greek myth. Visitors drop a coin in its jaws for luck and rub its snout to ensure a return to Florence, a tradition noted by Tobias Smollett in 1766.
