Beschrijving
This Virgil is a marble sculpture by Gabriel Thomas, reflecting the Neoclassical fascination with literary subjects. Among the most celebrated were figures from Dante, such as the Roman poet Virgil, Dante’s guide through the underworld in the Divine Comedy. Romanticism loved the pairing of Virgil and Dante, but Neoclassical sculpture focused on the Roman poet alone. A dignified figure for a library.
