Beschrijving
Balballa is one of the ancient ‘stone women’ that stood in the University Grove in Tomsk from the end of the 19th century, brought from Altai and Kazakhstan by professors Vasily Florinsky and Vasily Sapozhnikov. Each of these sculptures is over a thousand years old. Such statues were erected from the 6th century in the First Turkic Khaganate, an empire stretching from Korea to the Crimea. They personified people who once lived, such as rulers and military nobility, honoured by their descendants.
